• Another strong showing for the Senators

    May 12, 2017

Last weekend was the second of the three weekends for the Smarter than Smoking BWA Basketball Championships. The weekend featured the largest age group across the state - the u13s. With a total of 6 divisions (u13 Champs through to div 3), we had 9 teams take the court and represent the club colours. All of the teams represented the club with pride, with passion & displayed excellence on and off the court.

With regards to records, we had a combined record of 26 wins, 13 losses & 1 draw. In the 6 divisions, we had 4 teams make semifinals, 2 grand final appearances & 1 eventual grand final victory. There were a number of highlights through the weekend. It was also great to see so many of our referees involved once again - even receiving some grand final games!

Firstly, our U13-2 boys team went through the weekend with a record of 6-0 & thus won the grand final over the Perry Lakes Hawks. Congratulations to Justin Berry for his MVP award for this match. Our U13-2 girls came away with the runner up against a very good Albany team. Both teams went into the game 5-0 but it was Albany who eventually came away with the win. The other 2 teams who made the semi-finals were the u13 Champ boys & the U13-3 boys. Both teams lost by narrow margins (5 & 2 points) to the eventual winners - Willetton Tigers & the Hills Raiders.

Another highlight was during one of the U13 boys games, played against the Geraldton Buccs. In this game, 3 of the teams not currently playing came and created a fantastic cheer squad for the entire game. It was a great display of support and the culture within the club. It is difficult for any opposition to contend with 40 players wearing the blue and green cheering on their peers to victory!

We want to again thank everyone who made this weekend such an incredible success. The coaches, the managers (mumagers at times!), & the parents who played taxi all weekend....THANK YOU! To our referees - thank you for being there, for working hard at the trade, & for not taking it too personal when there are some tense moments in the game....thank you!

Senators are looking forward to another great weekend to come in the close out of the 2017 State Champs!
